Ruling on Valentines day.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

Valentine’s Day is a jaahili Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christian. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE. The kuffaar still celebrate this festival, during which immorality and evil are practised widely. For more details on this celebration, please see: Celebrating Valentine’s Day .

Secondly:

It is not permissible for a Muslim to celebrate any of the festivals of the kuffaar, because festivals come under the heading of shar’i issues which are to be based on the sound texts.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Festivals are part of sharee’ah, clear way and rituals of which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way”

[al-Maa’idah 5:48]

“For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies which they must follow”

[al-Hajj 22:67]

— such as the qiblah (direction faced in prayer), prayer and fasting. There is no difference between their participating in the festival and their participating in all other rituals. Joining in fully with the festival is joining in with kufr, and joining in with some of its minor issues is joining in with some of the branches of kufr. Indeed, festivals are one of the most unique features that distinguish various religions and among their most prominent symbols, so joining in with them is joining in with the most characteristic and prominent symbols of kufr. No doubt joining in with this may lead to complete kufr.

Partially joining in, at the very least, is disobedience and sin. This was indicated by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he said: “Every people has its festival and this is our festival.” This is worse than joining them in wearing the zinaar (a garment that was worn only by ahl al-dhimmah) and other characteristics of theirs, for those characteristics are man-made and are not part of their religion, rather the purpose behind them is simply to distinguish between a Muslim and a kaafir. As for the festival and its rituals, this is part of the religion which is cursed along with its followers, so joining in with it is joining in with something that is a cause of incurring the wrath and punishment of Allaah. End quote from Iqtida’ al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem (1/207).

He also said (may Allaah have mercy on him): It is not permissible for the Muslims to imitate them in anything that is uniquely a part of their festivals, whether it be food, clothing, bathing, lighting fires, refraining from a regular habit, doing acts of worship or anything else. It is not permissible to give a feast or to give gifts, or to sell anything that will help them to do that for that purpose, or to allow children and others to play games that are part of the festivals, or to wear one’s adornments.

To conclude: the Mulsims should not do any of their rituals at the time of their festivals; rather the day of their festival should be like any other day for the Muslims. The Muslims should not do anything specific in imitation of them. End quote from Majmoo al-Fataawa (25/329).

Al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: If the Christians have a festival, and the Jews have a festival, it is only for them, so no Muslim should join them in that, just as no Muslim should join them in their religion or their direction of prayer. End quote from Tashabbuh al-Khasees bi Ahl al-Khamees, published in Majallat al-Hikmah (4/193)

The hadeeth to which Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah referred was narrated by al-Bukhaari (952) and Muslim (892) from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) who said: Abu Bakr came in and there were two young girls of the Ansaar with me who were singing about what had happened to the Ansaar on the day of Bu’aath. She said: And they were not (professional) singing girls. Abu Bakr said: “Musical instruments of the shaytaan in the house of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)?!” and that was on the day of Eid. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O Abu Bakr, every people has a festival and this is our festival.”

Abu Dawood (1134) narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah, they had two days when they would play. He said: “What are these two days?” They said: “We used to play on these days during the Jaahiliyyah.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah has given you instead of them two days that are better than them: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr.” This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.

This indicates that festivals are among the characteristics by which nations are distinguished, and it is not permissible to celebrate the festivals of the ignorant and the mushrikeen (polytheists).

The scholars have issued fatwas stating that it is haraam to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

1 –Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

In recent times the celebration of Valentine’s Day has become widespread, especially among female students. It is a Christian festival where people dress completely in red, including clothes and shoes, and they exchange red flowers. We hope that you can explain the ruling on celebrating this festival, and what your advice is to Muslims with regard to such matters; may Allaah bless you and take care of you.

He replied:

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons.

1-     It is an innovated festival for which there is no basis in Islam.

2-     It promotes love and infatuation.

3-     It calls for hearts to be preoccupied with foolish matters that are contrary to the way of the righteous salaf (may Allaah be pleased with them).

It is not permissible on this day to do any of the things that are characteristic of this festival, whether that has to do with food, drinks, clothing, exchanging gifts or anything else.

The Muslim should be proud of his religion and should not be a weak character who follows every Tom, Dick and Harry. I ask Allaah to protect the Muslims from all temptations, visible and invisible, and to protect us and guide us.

2 – The Standing Committee was asked: Some people celebrate Valentine’s Day on the fourteenth of February every year. They exchange gifts of red roses and wear red clothes and congratulate one another. Some bakeries make red coloured sweets and draw hearts on them, and some stores advertise products that are especially for this day. What is your opinion on the following:

1-     Celebrating this day

2-     Buying things from the stores on this day

3-     Storekeepers who are not celebrating it selling things that may be given as gifts to people who are celebrating it?

They replied:

The clear evidence of the Qur’aan and Sunnah – and the consensus of the early generations of this ummah – indicates that there are only two festivals in Islam: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Any other festivals that have to do with a person, a group, an event or anything else are innovated festivals, which it is not permissible for Muslims to observe, approve of or express joy on those occasions, or to help others to celebrate them in any way, because that is transgressing the sacred limits of Allaah, and whoever transgresses the sacred limits of Allaah has wronged himself. If the fabricated festival is also a festival of the kuffaar, then the sin is even greater, because this is imitating them and it is a kind of taking them as close friends, and Allaah has forbidden the believers to imitate them and take them as close friends in His Holy Book. And it is proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Valentine’s Day comes under this heading because it is an idolatrous Christian festival, so it is not permissible for a Muslim who believes in Allaah and the Last Day to observe it or approve of it or congratulate people on it. Rather he has to ignore it and avoid it, in obedience to Allaah and His Messenger, and so as to keep away from the causes that incur the wrath and punishment of Allaah. It is also haraam for the Muslim to help people to celebrate this or any other haraam festival by supplying any kind of food or drink, or buying or selling or manufacturing or giving or advertising etc., because all of that is cooperating in sin and transgression and is disobedience towards Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment”

[al-Maa’idah 5:2]

The Muslim must adhere to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah in all his affairs, especially at times of fitnah when evil is widespread. He should be smart and avoid falling into the misguidance of those who have earned Allaah’s anger and who have gone astray, and the evildoers who have no fear of Allaah and who do not have any pride in being Muslims. The Muslim must turn to Allaah and seek His guidance and remain steadfast in following it, for there is no Guide except Allaah and no one can make a person steadfast but Him. And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions. End quote.

3 – Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (may Allaah preserve him) was asked:

Among our young men and women it has become common to celebrate Valentine’s Day, which is named after a saint who is venerated by the Christians, who celebrate it every year on February 14, when they exchange gifts and red roses, and they wear red clothes. What is the ruling on celebrating this day and exchanging gifts?

He replied:

Firstly: it is not permissible to celebrate these innovated festivals, because it is an innovation for which there is no basis in Islam. It comes under the heading of the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.”

Secondly: it involves imitating the kuffaar and copying them by venerating that which they venerate and respecting their festivals and rituals, and imitating them in something that is part of their religion. In the hadeeth it says: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

Thirdly: it results in evils and haraam things such as wasting time, singing, music, extravagance, unveiling, wanton display, men mixing with women, women appearing before men other than their mahrams, and other haraam things, or things that are a means that leads to immorality. That cannot be excused by the claim that this is a kind of entertainment and fun. The one who is sincere towards himself should keep away from sin and the means that lead to it.

And he said:

Based on this, it is not permissible to sell these gifts and roses, if it is known that the purchaser celebrates these festivals or will give these things as gifts on those days, so that the seller will not be a partner of the one who does those innovations. And Allaah knows best. End quote.

Pointless festivals


Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

I remember when we used to live in Manchester, the worst place for practicing your deen, when it was round about Halloween. Our street was peaceful and quiet, with barely any children that used to live there, so we hardly got any knocks on our door, asking for sweets. But once, however, it was 9 o’clock at night, and we heard a knock on the door. I remember my mum, her confused expression matching ours. Who could  it be? She asked me to open the door, and when I did, to my fright, I saw this monster glaring at me with its yellow bloodshot eyes.

I almost laughed at my stupidity when the boy took his mask off, and said the custom “Trick or treat!”. I explained to him that we don’t really celebrate Halloween, as it’s not part of out religion, and he understood instantly, saying, “Yeah, actually, same here.. I don’t even know why I’m celebrating it.”

When he went, I found myself thinking, if you’re not supposed to celebrate something, why do it? The boy was just following some sort of tradition that the western culture have, and relishing it greatly, maybe because of the sweets he thinks he is going to get, or maybe so he doesn’t get left out.

My point is, that you get alot of influence  from the western society, and you have to be careful what things are permissable to follow, and which could be outright haram. The boy knew what he was doing was wrong, yet he had no-one to stop him, so he just carried on.

Alhamdulillah, my mum told me strictly what was permissable and what wasn’t, and she forbade me doing any of the haram activities that my non-muslim friends might have been doing. I was angry at her at the time, but as I have grwon up and matured abit, I know what she did was the best for me. She helped me grow up in the best of the environments, not letting me get sucked in too much, and alhamdulillah, it worked.

So people, don’t get too involved with all these celebrations that are wrong, and also, find out why they are wrong, so whenever you find the chance, try to spread the message about why its wrong, and shouldn’t be practiced.

Oppressed? I think not.


Oh, so we are oppressed now huh? Just because we have decided to protect ourselves from the ravaging desire in men? That’s oppression? Go check the dictionary.

Their women can’t even go out of the house without slapping on tons of makeup that makes them look “pretty”, without making sure they look really attractive by wearing skin tight clothing, drenching themselves in perfume, and being all giggly and super annoying. They have such low esteem of themselves that when they get a small spot that is barely recognisable, they have a “traumatic experience to be with them for the rest of their lives”….. and you’re calling us oppressed?

Every heard of natural beauty people? Ever heard of keeping that natural beauty protected for your one love in life, i.e your husband? It seems not.

Sisters (and brothers?) this world is but a journey. Like a person going on a long journey, and resting in the shade of a tree. That shade is this dunya, just temporary. We shouldn’t let small small things of  “Oh, but I won’t look pretty,” “But people will stare at me,” “No-ones going to like me,”…. deter us from our straight path.

We need to keep our haya (modesty)  intact and we need to do our best to please Allah

Which is why I have chosen to start wearing the niqab.

Here are some of the styles that i thik suit women the best.

I really like the long ones that come from your head. They really suit tall sisters, making them look graceful and elegant. They also look really nice on other height, the way they drag and are so flowy. These types are great for both summer and winter.. You can wear as many layers as you want underneath it in the winter, since it will never become tight on you, and in the summer, you can just wear a simple t-shirt and trouser, and this will keep you nice and cool by having the air circulate around your body due to its flowyness (is that a word?)

Do you have a boyfriend?


“EVERY week I meet two high school girls at a place in Jeddah where I attend classes. Most of their excited talk revolves around the ‘hottest’ guy in their school to the weekly sundry crushes they have. The girls are ever-inquisitive about how many boyfriends I have, and have even managed to peep at my phone’s contact book, stopping at every male contact to look askance at me and ask: ‘This must be your boyfriend, no?’

Sometimes, in social gatherings, the ‘are you married?’ or ‘are you engaged’ questions are replaced with ‘do you have a boyfriend?’

Call me old-fashioned or simply passion-proof, I admit I have never been fascinated by my schoolmates’, and later, college mates’, obsession with the B-word. Yes, Boyfriend. ‘Top Secrets’ are kept, classes are bunked, rumors are made and even fights are picked up because of the B-word.

Why are we girls so fixated over what can be best described as an illicit non-marital (similar to extra-marital) relationship?………………….”

We women have to be careful…


Narrated by ‘Abdullah: Allah has cursed those women who practise tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who remove their face hairs(1), and those who create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, and women changing the features created by Allah. Why then should I not curse those whom the Prophet has cursed? And that is in Allah’s Book. i.e. His Saying: ‘And what the Apostle gives you take it and what he forbids you abstain (from it).’ (59.7)

 

(1)  It would be permitted for a woman to remove a beard or a moustache that appears on her face. Even though it is facial hair, but since it is to stop women from resembling men, it is permitted. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, in fact they have said it is recommended, not just permitted. The same will be to bleach this hair instead.

If the eyebrows are linked in between, it would be permissible to remove the excess hair from in between to separate them [i.e. the hair above the nose]. The reason for this is that linked eyebrows are looked upon as a defect, hence it would be permissible to remove it.

Every soul shall taste death…


[ 29:57 ]

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ثُمَّ إِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ

English Dr. Mohsin Khan: Everyone shall taste the death. Then unto Us you shall be returned.

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم مِّنَ الْجَنَّةِ غُرَفًا تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا نِعْمَ أَجْرُ الْعَامِلِينَ

English Dr. Mohsin Khan: And those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give lofty dwellings in Paradise, underneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward of the workers.

الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ

English Dr. Mohsin Khan: Those who are patient, and put their trust (only) in their Lord (Allâh).

وَكَأَيِّن مِن دَابَّةٍ لَا تَحْمِلُ رِزْقَهَا اللَّهُ يَرْزُقُهَا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

English Dr. Mohsin Khan: And so many a moving (living) creature carries not its own provision! Allâh provides for it and for you. And He is the All-Hearer, the All¬Knower.

Some people these days…


Our religion is the most beautiful religion of all. Why are we not embracing it? Why do we ignore the importance of knowing our religion? People these days are too caught up in wordly things that don’t matter now, and definitley won’t matter in the hereafter; like “hmm, which car should I buy Honda or Toyota.. should i buy normal, seven seater or 3 door.. which colour?.. Red looks nice no no, sorry i like the blue one.. well the silver looks rather eyecatching………………..” and on it goes.

Who cares what kind of car you get? Are you doing all of this so you make a nice impression to your neighbours? Infact, forget making a nice impression, you WANT them to know that you are well off – by having a nice car etc.. whatever happened to religion? do we take notice of what we say, that it could be makrooh (disliked act) or maybe even haraam?
People do all kind of things without giving a second thought to what they are doing.. and then come the excuses and the complication of different types of muslims… For example, (life story coming up.. :P)A couple of months or so before, I was sat in arabic class ”learning” arabic, and this guy comes up with a question that is directed to the teacher. (the teacher is from tunisia and he is a muslim)

::: “Sir, is music haraam?
Now I’m sure we all know the answer to that, and with certainty, we would all say yes. However i was very shocked that and annoyed at the teacher when he blatantly said no, like everyone would agree. I was amazed as were 4 other students (there were only 6 students in the class) and disagreed strongly. From that point onwards, we had an argument that lasted for the rest of the lesson, all 4 students were backing me up, as we were not prepared to let him go and have the last word.
So we argued; boy did we argue! His point was that it is makrooh, so i was like if it is makrooh then why do you do it? And he’s like it’s not haraam so it’s not forbidden, and anyways too many people are dying in muslim countries and we are too caught in having beards and having above the ankle and not listening to music and all of that stuff. WHAT!! I was fuming! I said yes all that matters but we still have to pay attention to small details of our religion! you might think that music and hijaab and beard is small, but infact they aren’t and we have to pay great attention to them, as after all they still are part of the religion! He then came up with this: you are extremists. WHAT!! He said that there is a hadeeth where the Prophet (pbuh) said that it’s better to be in the middle that both extremes. I said, ok, so how come the prophet used to wear above the ankle? How come the prophet had beard, and how come he never listened to music? How many people were dying in his time? How many muslims being killed? Yet didnt he still do all the little little things? Just because major things are happening, doesn’t mean that you have an excuse to listen to music does it? Well.. he had nothing to say to that. The next lesson, I gave him my proof, and he read it and said ‘fairly’ that if I want I could go on the internet and print out proof that music is halal, since different people have different ideas. I went mad!! I was so annoyed that I asked him what muslim he was. When he said ‘Im a moderate Muslim. I want to make Islam better for people‘, I just shut up. What can I say to that? Moderate Muslims are changing the religion to how they like it, which if you think about it is haraam- it’s plain Bid’ah. I gave up trying; I literally shut up talking to him from then on. What was the point? He would never undertsand anyway. I’d done my bit.. well what else can I do?

People think religion is a joke, that it’s just some thing you pay attention to when you have time, or when you can be bothered. Its not like that. Religion is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN GET. IT’S THE ONLY THING THAT WE ARE HERE FOR!! SO START PAYING ATTENTION TO IT!

Virtues of Hijaab


1.An act of obedience.
The hijab is an act of obedience to Allah and to his prophet (pbuh), Allah says in the Qur’an: `It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His messenger have decreed a matter that they should have an option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed strayed in a plain error.(S33:36).
Allah also said: And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc) and not to show off their adornment except what must (ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their Juyubihinna.‘(S24:31).
Juyubihinna: The respected scholars from As-Salaf As-Saleh (righteous predecessors) differed whether the veil cover of the body must include the hands and face or not. Today, respected scholars say that the hands and face must be covered. Other respected scholars say it is preferable for women to cover their whole bodies.

2.The Hijab is IFFAH (Modesty).
Allah (subhana wa’atala) made the adherence to the hijab a manifestation for chastity and modesty. Allah says: ‘O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) over their bodies (when outdoors). That is most convenient that they should be known and not molested.’ (S33:59). In the above Ayaah there is an evidence that the recognition of the apparent beauty of the woman is harmful to her. When the cause of attraction ends, the restriction is removed. This is illustrated in the case of elderly women who may have lost every aspect of attraction. Allah (swt) made it permissible for them to lay aside their outer garments and expose their faces and hands reminding, however, that is still better for them to keep their modesty.

3.The hijab is Tahara (Purity) Allah (swt) had shown us the hikma (wisdom) behind the legislation of the hijab: `And when you ask them (the Prophet’s wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and their hearts.’ (S33:53).
The hijab makes for greater purity for the hearts of believing men and women because it screens against the desire of the heart. Without the hijab, the heart may or may not desire. That is why the heart is more pure when the sight is blocked (by hijab) and thus the prevention of fitna (evil actions is very much manifested. The hijab cuts off the ill thoughts and the greed of the sick hearts:
`Be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy or evil desire for adultery, etc) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.’ (S33:32)

4.The hijab is a Shield
The prophet (pbuh) said: “Allah, Most High, is Heaven, is Ha’yeii (Bashful), Sit’teer (Shielder). He loves Haya’ (Bashfulness) and Sitr (Shielding; Covering).” The Prophet (pbuh) also said: “Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband’s house (to show off for unlawful purposes), has broken Allah’s shield upon her. The hadith demonstrates that depending upon the kind of action committed there will be either reward (if good) or punishment (if bad).

5. The hijab is Taqwah (Righteousness)
Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an: `O children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc) and as an adornment. But the raiment of righteousness, that is better.'(S7:26). The widespread forms of dresses in the world today are mostly for show off and hardly taken as a cover and shield of the woman’s body. To the believing women, however the purpose is to safeguard their bodies and cover their private parts as a manifestation of the order of Allah. It is an act of Taqwah (righteousness).

6.The hijab is Eemaan (Belief or Faith)
Allah (swt) did not address His words about the hijab except to the believing women, Al-Mo’minat. In many cases in the Qur’an Allah refers to the “the believing women”. Aisha (RA), the wife of the prophet (pbuh), addressed some women from the tribe of Banu Tameem who came to visit her and had light clothes on them, they were improperly dressed: “If indeed you are believing women, then truly this is not the dress of the believing women, and if you are not believing women, then enjoy it.”

7. The hijab is Haya’ (Bashfulness)
There are two authentic hadith which state: “Each religion has a morality and the morality of Islam is haya'” AND “Bashfulness is from belief, and belief is in Al-Jannah (paradise)”. The hijab fits the natural bashfulness which is a part of the nature of women.

8.The hijab is Gheerah
The hijab fits the natural feeling of Gheerah, which is intrinsic in the straight man who does not like people to look at his wife or daughters. Gheerah is a driving emotion that drives the straight man to safeguard women who are related to him from strangers. The straight MUSLIM man has Gheerah for ALL MUSLIM women In response to lust and desire, men look (with desire) at other women while they do not mind that other men do the same to their wives or daughters. The mixing of sexes and absence of hijab destroys the Gheera in men. Islam considers Gheerah an integral part of faith. The dignity of the wife or daughter or any other Muslim woman must be highly respected and defended.

“It’s not a big sin. Helping people and praying is more important.”

You mean Allah tells you something to do, you disobey and then it’s OK?”
“Yes. Allah is forgiving.”

“Allah is forgiving to those who repent and do not repeat their mistakes.”
“Says who?”

“Says the same book that tells you to cover.”
“But I don’t like hijab, it limits my freedom.”
“But the lotions, lipsticks, mascara and other cosmetics set you free?! What’s your definition of freedom anyway?”
“Freedom is in doing whatever you like to do.”
“No. Freedom is in doing the right thing, not in doing whatever we wish to do.”
“Look! I’ve seen so many people who don’t wear hijab and are nice people, and so many who wear hijab and are bad people.”

“So what? There are people who are nice to you but are alcoholic. Should we all be alcoholics? You made a stupid point.”

“You don’t get it, if I wear hijab, who would marry me?!”

“So all these people with hijab never get married?!”
“Okay! Wha t if I get married and my husband doesn’t l i ke it? And wants me to remove it?”

“What if your husband wants you to go out with him on a bank robbery?!”
“That’s irrelevant, bank robbery is a crime.”

“Disobeying your Creator is not a crime?”

“Doesn’t TV, magazines and movies tell you what to wear, and how to be ‘attractive’?”

“Not just controlling you, but also controlling the market.”

“I mean, you are told to look skinny and anorexic like that woman on the cover of the magazine, by men who design those magazines and sell those products.”
“I don’t get it. What does hijab have to do with products.”
“It has everything to do with that. Don’t you see? Hijab is a threat to consumerism, women who spend billions of dollars to look skinny and live by standards of fashion designed by men.and then here is Islam, saying trash all that nonsense and focus on your soul, not on your looks, and do not worry what men think of your looks.”
“Like I don’t have to buy hijab? Isn’t hijab a product?”

“Yes, it is. It is a product that sets you free from male-dominated consumerism .”
“Stop lecturing me! I WILL NOT WEAR HIJAB! It is awkward, outdated, and totally not suitable for this society …
Moreover, I am only 20 and too young to wear hijab!”

“Fine. Say that to your Lord, when you face Him on Judgment Day.”
“Fine.”

“Fine.”
Silence
“Keep quiet and I don’t want to hear more about hijab niqab blab!”
Silence.
She stared at the mirror, tired of arguing with herself all this time. Successful enough, she managed to shut the voices in her head, with her own opinions triumphant in victory on the matter, and a final modern decision accepted by the society, rejected by the Faith:
